In the
Spring of 2016, I proudly became a Certified Fairyologist!
Against the
wishes of a resistant little voice in my head that at first told me not to be
so silly and frivolous, I completed Doreen Virtue’s fun and uplifting Fairyologist certificate course… (I had
a birthday coming up, so in the end decided to treat myself).
It was a beautiful
moment of Divine Timing that unfolded this Spring, but part of a story that
really began five and a
half years ago, when my daughter was born, and the Fairies moved in.
The birth
year of my gorgeous girl was a time of great opening, for me, and for our
family as we settled into our new home.
People sent
fairy dolls, fairy cards, fairy ornaments… I, being an adult like so many, who
had forgotten that fairies may exist at all, found myself once again drawn to
images and objects depicting fairies of all kinds. I fell in love with the gorgeous
Faery Grotto shop in our town and visited it often with my babies…
Our bare and
barren garden began to flourish with all kinds of wild growth… and that year of
my little girl’s birth, we grew record-breaking Sunflowers visible across the
whole neighbourhood… the Sunflowers are no more, but to this day it is wild and
verdant and green and a haven for all kinds of living things, seen and unseen.
My own
creativity began to flow again in deep and myriad ways.
There was
something so be-Spirited about that time and it continues on;
My daughter
is a few more years grown, as is our deep sense of home and my little fairy-craft business
that sprang out of that time.
The fairies
moved in, and they never left…
And even
though I don’t always see them, there is always a kind of playful magic in the
air when we feel our creativity flowing and the right things find their way to
us at the right time, in the right way, without us knowing how.
This Spring,
my wonderful, funny, clever, beloved Nanny, passed peacefully away.
The primroses
were in bloom and as I glanced at them from the bedroom window, across the bed
where she lay. I gently told her all about them, having learned that they were gateways
to the Fairy Kingdom, to that other place, the magical garden inside her own
beautiful gardens… and as she nodded and smiled at me, I knew deep down that she might already somehow know…
for you see, my Nanny’s house was FULL of fairies! Quite literally – so many
little fairy figures and images… so much so that a cousin lovingly called our
Nanny’s house “The Fairy House”.
I had
forgotten all of this, growing up. Quite forgotten. Until these last year’s
passed after the Fairies had moved in and I began noticing again…
Who came in with my daughter that
year to remind me of this ancestral connection? To remind me that seeing
Fairies was not an affliction, a delusion… it was just in my blood… all along.
I’m so glad
that I had the chance to let my magical, Fairy-Butterfly-Angel-loving Nanny know
that there was officially a Fairyologist in the family!
To me, it
was such a beautiful light-hearted moment of gentle humour and connection that
I will always be grateful for, just in time, between Granddaughter and Grandmother,
at the end of a this-world lifetime – the passing on of a little flame, for I vow
to keep this nature loving Spirit alive in our family as the years go on...

Faery Lore
is ancient, mythic, and world encompassing. Cultures across the world and
throughout human history have depicted and engaged with spirits and fairy folk
of all kinds. It is not silly or mere escapism from the harsh truths of
reality, but something more. It is about Earth kindness, deep environmentalism,
respect for Mother Nature, animals, each other, as well as a form of deep
Earth-based spirituality. All of this came through in this gorgeous, fun,
accessible and practical course created by Doreen Virtue, and inspired me to keep
hush the sometimes cynical voice in my head and instead continue enjoy
communing with the Fairies and talking to Spirits.
I love William Bloom’s book Working with Angels, Fairies
and Nature Spirits and in the introduction he echoes this sentiment:
“To embrace this parallel dimension is not
naïve or superstitious, but fulfilling, holistic and practical. It stimulates
ideas and is a source of creativity. It also confers responsibility for our
environment and fellow creatures”
I adore the
creativity and playfulness as well as simple kindnesses and thought for others
that engaging with all things Faery has brought to our own family life. It is a
kind of anti-dote to all the hi-tech branded things my kids seem to enjoy now
that they are getting older… a keeper of the innocence and the faith, as well
as just being fun… Indeed, now that I am officially a Fairyologist my son likes to believe that mummy really does have Fairy Magic :-)
As a Fairyologist, I can…
